they are made first of wax, then the mold is made, wax burns out and you cast them in metal. You should look up "lost wax method" if you want to know details.

With respect to your question, a winged lion doesn't ring any bells. Lion are associated with Sekhmet and sphinxes, wings mostly with Ma'at. I don't think I ever saw them combined in a single creature, though.

I looked into it furter and found that the greek sphinxes have wings. But I think I saw a wall relief of one like that in some documentary and that relief was in Egypt.
